Gasgoo.com (Shanghai September 19) - There are currently 219 million different types of vehicles on China's roads today, with over 100 million of them being automobiles, Xinhua quoted the Ministry of Public Security as announcing. The other 54.12 percent, or 119 million units, were motorcycles.

The number of automobiles on China's roads is second only to the US' 285 million, and includes three-wheel and slow moving four-wheel trucks (also known as agricultural use vehicles). Even without counting those vehicles, China still has the world's second largest number of automobiles, greater than number three Japan's 70 million.

From 2006 to 2010, the number of automobiles in the world has almost doubled, with China making up a significant chunk of that increase. The country is quickly becoming an automobile society, with the number of privately bought vehicles increasing rapidly. According to international statistics, a country can be considered to be an automobile society if 20 of 100 households have their own car, which China has recently passed.
