摘要
The market for home wireless monitoring in healthcare is still nascent, but rapidly evolving. Among the most common conditions to monitor at home are irregular heartbeats or cardiac arrhythmia, high blood pressure, the glucose levels in diabetes, and high levels of lipids or fats in the blood. In Europe and North America 40 million people have cardiac arrhythmia, 200 million people have high blood pressure, 60 million people are diabetic, and 180 million people have severe elevation of blood lipids. All these diseases are increasing as a result of people getting older and heavier, and all are major causes of high healthcare costs. Today, there exists equipment allowing home monitoring of all the conditions. Almost all new devices
are digital, and there is a strong tendency towards data transfer capability and wireless
features. While many companies are making efforts towards developing specialised PDAs coupled to each monitor, Berg Insight believes that other devices as mobile phones and computers will be used, and that data will be collected in central server systems, allowing location-independent access. Furthermore, Internet based health portals will drive the development. Berg Insight expects data monitoring and distance disease management to become the key parts of tomorrow’s healthcare system.
The market for wireless monitoring solutions for home medical care is still in a very early healthcare industry, which is thoroughly regulated and generally operates under difficult financial conditions. Currently remote monitoring has only given rise to a substantial market in cardiac monitoring.
The global market for cardiac monitoring is worth less than US$ 300 million, mainly in the US. There is currently an ongoing shift in technology from primitive transtelephonic transfer to modern means of communication. The market is dominated by CardioNet, CardGuard and Raytel Cardiac Services, but there are also several upstart companies such as Transoma offering interesting alternatives, as well as established medical device manufacturers such as Medtronic. The blood pressure monitoring world market is worth about US$ 800 million, with a growth rate of 9 percent, and dominated by Omron, with Microlife and A&D Medical as runners up. The adoption of wireless solutions is still in its infancy in this segment. The world glucose level monitoring market is worth US$ 8.9 billion, and is growing at a rate of 11 percent annually. Roche, Johnson & Johnson, Abbott and Bayer together hold 90 percent of the market. Abbott recently became the first of the major companies to offer continuous glucose monitoring. The global lipid monitoring market is worth approximately US$ 100
million and is growing by 7 percent annually. Biomedix and CardioChek are the market
leaders.
Recently, a range of IT and telecom companies, such as France Telecom, Deutche Telekom and Alcaltel-Lucent have released healthcare related products, and Qualomm even plans to start a health-oriented MVNO, Lifecomm. Also, many handset manufacturers have shown a clear interest in health-related applications, and some, like LG, have even integrated medical monitors in certain models. Furthermore the IT giants Google and Microsoft have recently released health portals, where users can gather and analyse medical data.
