Executive summary
Bolivia optimistic
After years of economic and social instability, Bolivia continues to recover. The travel and tourism industry, which is highly affected by these matters, is showing signs of recovery as a result of an upward economic cycle. Bolivia has very strong potential for growth due to its historical and environmental characteristics. However, while tourism is important to the economy, the government has yet to realise its full potential.
Starting to work towards a better travel and tourism industry
Bolivia’s tourism authorities are aware of the importance of designing tourism promotion policies which will transform the country into a final tourist destination rather than just a stop over as part of a multi-country tour. This is one of the main goals of institutions, both public and private. It is expected that the government will pay renewed attention to the Law of Tourism Promotion, which was passed in 2000 and has long since been neglected. The government is also seeking to increase international awareness of Bolivia as a tourist destination.
Ecotourism a good opportunity not yet exploited
Ecotourism has the potential to be a large tourism draw as Bolivia has more than 22 national parks, which represent 15.6% of its territory. The government has done very little to promote, protect or develop ecotourism. However, local communities have turned to tourism as a means to sustain their community and protect natural resources. More and more local communities are embracing tourism.
