摘要
For most of its life, handsets have been partly or fully subsidised by the operators through the call charge margins. Operators then offered the handset for prices from as low as $0, depending on the combined handset/services package that the customer buys. However, by the early 2000s handsets were no longer expensive gadgets, as more and more people became increasingly interested in lower call charges, rather than fancy phones. As operators struggle with promoting new data services, the role of the handset is once again a strategic consideration. Operators are subsidising handsets which don’t deliver them any extra revenue. Interesting changes started to occur by 2008 with Apple and Google entering the market. By mid 2008, Nokia was still a clear leader for mobile handset, with Samsung moving into a firm number two position.
