摘要
Countries covered: Slovenia
Despite being smaller and more mature than most of its Central and Eastern European (CEE) peers,Slovenia is still regarded as a reasonably viable shorter-term prospect for pharmaceutical activities. InQ308, Slovenia is found in joint ninth place, alongside Romania, out of the 17 markets surveyed in theCEE region. The country’s ranking is negatively affected by its limited population number, negligiblepopulation growth and the country’s inadequate IP laws, as well as the low market growth forecasts. Onthe other hand, the expansive private insurance coverage and established trade regimes with WesternEurope allow for good placement of novel drugs onto the market, which will be the main driver of growthover the coming years.
However, the government continues to strive to contain pharmaceutical expenditure through theintroduction of limits on prescribing and the use of hospitals, among other measures. As part of thisprocess, generics - mostly of expensive branded variety - may suffer price reductions in the comingyears. In the meantime, the over-the-counter (OTC) segment will benefit from high consumer incomes, rising health consciousness and an interest in alternative medicines.
In terms of the pharmaceutical industry, difficult conditions in the home market will continue to pushdomestic players to expand abroad. To this end, in April 2008, Krka opened a new business centre inFormer Yugoslav Republic (FYR) of Macedonia’s capital, signifying its commitment to other regionalmarkets. In 2007, Krka’s sales in Macedonia reached EUR10mn in 2007, with the company being thecountry’s second-largest supplier of pharmaceuticals. Shortly prior to the opening of the centre, Krkarevealed that its Q108 group sales were 19% higher than in the same period of 2007, reachingEUR243.7mn, with exports accounting for over 90% of total sales. Slovenian sales, however, droppedslightly to EUR24.9mn, illustrating the difficulties faced at home.
In the meantime, the Slovenian medical devices market is relatively advanced in relation to its CEE peers.Further commercial opportunities are provided by the country’s wealth, healthcare system modernisationand rising patient demands. While imports have traditionally dominated the medical devices landscape, exports have recorded strong growth in recent years, with the main destinations being the territories of theformer Yugoslavia.
