Introduction
The total production of soft drinks reached 19.24 million kl and JPY 3.83 trillion in 2007; both showed more than 3% growth compared with 2006. While tea, coffee and carbonated drinks are the most consumed soft drinks, carbonated drinks and packaged water showed the most significant growth. Products with a healthy product image, such as zero / low calorie content and with beneficial health effects, were the focus in the market. Coca-Cola, Suntory and Kirin are the leading three companies in the soft drinks market.

The top five companies account for over 75% of the market in 2007 and have gradually gained more market share over the years.
