摘要

Australia’s involvement in the world of satellites dates back to the 1950s and 1960s. During these years, OTC was involved in projects such as the Russian Sputnik and the American moon missions. Australian entrepreneur, Kerry Packer, was amongst the first to recognise the more commercial potential of satellite communication. In 1977 he commissioned a report to investigate the launch of an Australian satellite. Subsequently Aussat was established in 1981, eventually sold to Optus in 1992. Mobile Satellite Services have been driven by the satellite industry’s need to find a continuing role in telecommunications.
