Competition

The Austrian financial cards market, compared to markets in countries such as the UK, has not been overly competitive. This is set to change as the two dominant operating companies have extended their product ranges to include each other's card products. This suggests some interesting, and perhaps, turbulent times ahead for the Austrian financial cards market.

Promising Future Trends

In line with the expected increase in competition, which will translate into new cards and the introduction of further card facilities by the issuers, it is expected that over the medium to long term the Austrian market will continue to expand its usage of financial cards. Wider card usage is expected through the development of facilities such as contactless payment, although the credit card sector is likely to remain relatively flat. There is also some indication that m-commerce (mobile phone payments) could be genuine competition for the payment card industry.

Debit Cards Predominate

In Austria debit cards continue to predominate both in terms of ownership and as the accepted card payment method. This is attributed to the fact that Austrians tend to be more cautious and risk averse and therefore less likely to acquire and make use of the other card payment methods. The banks have encouraged, largely unintentionally, this state of affairs as debit cards have become a standard requirement for attaining a charge or credit card in Austria.

Continued Low Awareness of Pre-paid Function

Even though most Austrians have a card with a pre-paid function, awareness and consequently usage of this function remains low. According to OeNB (Austrian National Bank), only one in five debit card owners are aware of the pre-paid function on their card. Having said that, there was some movement in this sector during 2007 as transactions value grew significantly over 2006.

Store Cards Underdeveloped in Austria

Traditional store cards are not popular in Austria; it is also a relatively new concept in the country. This is partly due to the fact that Austrian consumers are not used to buying retail goods on credit in contrast to consumers in countries such as the US and the UK. This is further highlighted by the fact that debit cards are more popular than credit cards in Austria. True store cards are only slowly entering the Austrian market with most retailers choosing to co-brand with the credit card companies.
