摘要

Financial Cards in Australia report establishes the size and structure of the market for ATMs, credit cards, debit cards, store cards and smart cards. It looks at key players in the market (issuers and operators), number of cards in circulation, numbers transactions and value of transactions. It offers strategic analysis of sector forecasts and trends to watch.

Executive summary

Australians love credit cards

The Australian market for payment cards has been unique throughout the last decade, in that credit cards have been more popular that debit cards. This is largely due to the major banks aggressively promoting the higher profit margin credit cards, largely through the establishment of rewards schemes, to an extent not seen in any other market. A slow-down in consumer confidence, rising interest rates and entry of the major banks into the schemed debit card market has seen the popularity of debit cards increase, with the number of debit transactions finally exceeding those of credit for the first time ever.

Visa no.1 but under pressure

Although by far the largest operator in Australia, Visa has faced challenges from market trends which have been better suited to its opponents rather than itself; the growth of the low rate segment, which has benefited MasterCard, and the restructuring of credit card rewards programs, which have benefited American Express. Visa has however countered this by being aggressive in its branching out to new segments such as pre-paid cards and schemed debit.

Bankcard fades away

Bankcard, Australia’s first mainstream credit card, after a decade of drifting into the background in the wake of Visa and MasterCard, has decided to call it a day. Although the biggest selling card in Australia, for a decade after its launch in 1974, it has increasingly become uncompetitive due to not being able to be used either on-line or overseas. Bankcard was eventually phased out in 2006.

On-line growth shakes up market

Although currently accounting for only a small proportion of transactions, on-line payments are experiencing rapid growth, and are having a widespread influence on the structure of the payment cards market. Card payment mechanisms shall thrive or demise depending on their suitability for the on-line environment, both in relation to access and their susceptibility to fraud. Bankcard has so far been phased out due to its incompatibility with on-line payments, and Australia’s EFTPOS debit system is at risk at sharing this fate. Schemed debit schemes and pre-paid cards shall however benefit from this shift to the on-line economy.

Slow start for smart cards

Australia, which relative to comparable markets has been slow to adopt smart cards, continues to experience teething problems, with transit systems continuously keen to trial the technology, but hesitant to commit to a large rollout. The low rates of fraud Australian banks have achieved using other methods, has led to a hesitation throughout the sector to make the expensive conversion to EMV standards. Momentum in the migration to smart cards is increasing however, largely due to fears that any further lags will turn Australia into a target for fraudsters.
