Key Insights On The Petrochemicals Sector Of Peru
Market Overview
Peru has a small petrochemical and chemical industry, which is mainly located around Lima and Callao. The country does not have production capacity for basic petrochemicals including ethylene, propylene and basic polymers. Besides, domestic and foreign chemicals and petrochemical players are generally reluctant to invest in the industry due to inconsistency in economic growth and political instability. Major domestic players in the industry are Quimpac, Intradevco, Petrobrás Energía Perú and Petroperu.
Industry Developments
The petrochemical sector in Peru is expected to witness a total investment of PEN8.03bn (US$2.5bn) in FY06. In November 2006, Peruvian firm Ajegroup signed an agreement with Mexico-based Ingenieros Petrolerosy Geofisicos for the construction of a petrochemical plant at Pampa Melchorita. Furthermore, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in the same month between Brazil-based Petrobrás and national oil companies Petroperu and Perupetro for the exploration, transportation, refining and application of natural gas along with the development of biodiesel and ethanol projects.
Camisea Project
Peru’s Camisea project, which is being developed by a consortium of the US-based Hunt Oil (50%), South Korea-based SK Corporation (30%) and Spain-based Repsol YPF (20%), aims to construct and operate a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant at Pampa Melchorita. The LNG plant is likely to become fully operational in 2010. The first phase of the project, in which gas from the Amazon is piped to Lima, began in 2003. The second phase of the project led by Hunt Oil comprises the construction of an LNG plant, with an initial production capacity of 4mn tonnes per annum (tpa).
Chemical Exports in 2006
During the first 10 months of 2006, Peru’s chemical exports increased 8.8% year-on-year (y-o-y) to US$488.6mn. Peru exported chemical products to 107 countries, with Colombia being the main chemicals importer accounting for 14% of Peru’s total chemical exports. The national exporters association Adex has forecast that the Peruvian chemical exports will rise 13% y-o-y in 2006 to US$600mn.
