Executive summary

Canada’s strong economy boosts consumer spending

Favourable economic conditions in 2007 helped to underpin sales of consumer electronics in Canada. Low unemployment rates and a solid housing market provided a boost to consumer confidence. Products such as digital televisions, portable media players, mobile phones, laptops, and navigational devices were in the highest demand during the year.

The rise of the Canadian dollar

The stunning rise of the Canadian dollar in relation to the US dollar is having a profound impact on the Canadian economy. The high dollar is hurting Canada’s manufacturing base, located in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, which is dependent on exports to the United States. On the other hand, the higher dollar is proving to be beneficial for Canadian consumers and many consumer electronics retailers and manufacturers are rolling back their prices to compete with the lower retail pricing found in the United States.

Prices keep going down

The consumer electronics market in Canada continues to face deflationary pressures. A number of factors have contributed to this, including the following: increased outsourcing of consumer electronics to China; the influx of competitively-priced South Korean, Taiwanese and Chinese brands; the surge in low-priced private label brands; the appreciation of the Canadian dollar which has led to lower-priced imports; and the rollback in prices by Canadian retailers wanting to compete with US retailers.

Canada’s shifting demographic landscape

Canada’s Baby Boomers still pack a punch in terms of retail spending power. Many of these Boomers, now in their peak earning years, have shown a strong partiality for the finer things in life, including high-end consumer electronics. However, as this demographic group grows older and more of them enter retirement, their interests are likely to shift to other activities, such as travelling.

Export market must remain strong

Solid consumer demand for consumer electronics is expected to continue into 2008 and beyond as the Canadian economy is expected to maintain its strong economic fundamentals. However, as the health of the Canadian economy is largely based on the strength of its export market and as its largest trading partner is the United States, any downturn south of the border will eventually hurt Canada’s economic prospects.
