During 2006 and 2007 the otherwise immature Haitian telecommunications market enjoyed significant growth in terms of mobile communications. Mobile subscriber numbers increased by nearly fivefold between 2004 and late 2007. This growth was principally stimulated by the launch, in May 2006, of Digicel’s GSM network. In its first eighteen months of operation Digicel secured around 1.5 million subscribers, thereby ushering in a new era of mobile competition. Nevertheless, Haiti’s fixed-line teledensity is still the lowest in Latin America. In mid-2007, President Rene Preval again slated the state-owned monopoly Teleco for privatisation, in anticipation of which approximately 3,000 employees were dismissed. This report provides information and key statistics on the Haitian fixed line, mobile, Internet and broadband markets.
