摘要
Market Overview
Bulgaria's petrochemical industry contributes significantly to the nation's economy. Lukoil Neftochim Bourgas, the Bulgarian subsidiary of Russia-based Lukoil, and Bulgaria-based Neochim and Agropolychim comprise the major players in the petrochemicals industry. Lukoil Neftochim operates the nation's two crackers, which have a combined capacity of 450,000tpa – expected to go up in the medium term on the back of announced investments plans. The Bulgarian chemicals sector is currently witnessing both local as well as overseas investment alongside the privatisation of some facilities.
Industry Trends and Developments
Industry developments mostly revolve around announced investment plans for the Lukoil Neftochim refinery. Lukoil has committed US$1bn in investment for its Bulgarian operations until 2011. Further, the refinery also needs to be in sync with EU petrochemical and environmental norms. Apart from this, Netherlands headquartered oil multinational, Rompetrol, is planning construction of a petrochemical storage facility in the country. Total investment in the facility is expected to be about EUR10mn (US$14.41mn).
Accession to EU
Bulgaria joined the EU on January 1 2007. This provides the country with an opportunity for sustained growth and rising standards of living. Further, EU-financed projects, are expected to boost economic performance through improved infrastructure. Integration into EU trading will also improve domestic productivity and competition. Most importantly, EU accession will help reduce Bulgaria's perceived economic risk and encourage private investment, helping further raise productivity and growth.
Industry Outlook
Riding on the back of announced investments in petrochemical facilities, ongoing operational reorganisation and the expected increase in demand for petrochemical and plastic commodities due to a Balkan region-wide boom in the manufacturing and construction industries, the Bulgarian petrochemical industry is likely to witness strong performance in the coming years.
