Recently I had an interesting conversation with TynTec, a global SMS messaging service. It operates a B2B service for customers who need to deliver reliable SMS to their end users, which include airlines, banking and government organisations.

TynTec has established an international network that currently consists of five strategically placed SMS centres (SMSCs) with operators around the world. These are typically smaller operators who are keen to increase traffic over their networks. Also these smaller operators need extensive roaming networks, which is an essential element of the service operated by TynTec.

Through these five operators the company is able to deliver its SMSs on 400 networks, thus covering 90% of all global mobile users. The network will be extended by another five operators, linking in another 300 networks, to cover the rapidly emerging markets in Latin America and Africa.

Through its own SMSC the company can fully manage and control each SMS and, if needed, continue to attempt delivery if there is a problem. This, of course, is essential for many businesses. The SMSCs of the major operators are not sufficiently finetuned for such a level of service and when congestion occurs SMSs are delayed, or maybe aren’t delivered at all. Through the use of the SS7 connectivity combined with its own SMS platform, TynTec is able to guarantee service delivery and provide Service Level Agreements (SLAs) on messaging.,

The extra costs of the service are around 15%-20% above the traditional costs of an SMS. This is mainly due to the company’s policy of resending the message until it is delivered, which increases the level of capacity used on the networks.

Based on the quality of the network the company also offers its services on a wholesale basis to carriers and other SMS messaging companies.
