According to a new technical market research report, Aerogels (AVM052A), the global market for aerogels will be worth $62 million in 2006. Over a five-year forecast period to 2011, the market will grow at an average annual growth rate (AAGR) of 72.5% to reach $951 million by 2011. Global consumption will be 707 metric tons in 2006, and will grow to 12,679 metric tons, an AAGR of 78.1%
Aerogel consumption and revenue growth is being driven primarily by the use of these materials in the manufacture of thermal insulation products used mainly for building and pipeline insulation. The thermal insulation sector is projected to account for 57.6% of total revenues in 2006. Other key sectors are consumer products, sensors and instrumentation, and pharmaceuticals.
In addition, numerous current research and development activities are aimed at finding innovative, low-cost fabrication methods for aerogels as well as new applications. In particular, aerogels are generating great interest in certain industry segments, where alternative materials are close to reaching their technological limits (such as in the microelectronics sector). Aerogels are ultra-light, low density, nanoporous materials that are suitable for manufacturing powders, microgranules, thin films, flexible sheets, and monoliths.
