US laminate demand to
reach $8 billion in 2011
Sales of decorative laminates in the US
are forecast to increase 3.8 percent per
year to 16.6 billion square feet in 2011,
valued at $8 billion. Gains will be
sparked by increased demand from the
flooring industry. Through 2011, the
market for laminate flooring is projected
to advance 9.6 percent per annum to 1.5
billion square feet. Increases in demand
will continue to be supported by laminate
flooring’s low cost, ease of installation
and low maintenance requirements.
Manufacturers have developed a wider
variety of styles of textures that more
closely resemble natural wood, improved
the product’s moisture resistance and
durability, and created tongue-and-groove
systems that facilitate installation. Of
crucial importance for laminate demand,
the domestic manufacturing base for
laminate flooring will continue to grow,
reducing the share of imported flooring in
the market.
Other gains for decorative laminates will
be driven by strong activity in nonresidential
construction, which will benefit
demand for laminate store fixtures and
wall panels. For store fixtures, advances
will stem from the price, performance
and style advantages of laminate materials,
as well as ongoing strength in retail
sales activity. The development of more
stylish and more realistic designs is a key
element in the growth of laminate
demand in store fixtures. Decorative
laminate fixtures can be designed to meet
specific design requirements, such as
high-gloss and metallic surfaces, while
offering retailers scratch resistance and
ease of maintenance.
Manufacturers of laminates will continue
to offer a wide range of product styles
and textures, especially those that
resemble natural materials. Laminates
need to continue to offer customers cost
or design advantages over other materials,
particularly natural wood and solid
surfacing materials. In countertop
applications, for example, materials such
as granite, engineered quartz, and solid
surfacing materials provide strong
competition to laminates.
Cabinet market to benefit
from home renovations
Cabinets will use over 4.4 billion square
feet of decorative laminates in 2011,
despite below-average growth. Homeowners’
desires to renovate their
kitchens and bathrooms will remain the
primary growth driver for the market, as

consumers will continue to use laminates
due to their ease of maintenance and
relative low cost. Further advances will
be restrained by a slowdown in the new
residential construction.
Low-pressure laminates
to remain dominant
Laminates made from low-pressure overlays,
including low-basis weight papers,
saturated papers, decorative foils and
vinyl films, are forecast to comprise
about 80 percent of decorative laminate
sales volume in 2011. Demand will be
driven by greater use of saturated papers
in the high-growth flooring market and
better printing technologies that create
laminates with more realistic woodgrain.
High-pressure laminates are expected to
post above average growth through 2011.
These laminates will continue to be
desired because of their durability and
resistance to impacts and marring. Highpressure
laminates will be used in the
production of flooring, countertops,
fixtures and other items with horizontal
surfaces. However, some low-pressure
laminates, such as decorative foils and
saturated papers, will be increasingly
competitive with high-pressure laminates.
