摘要
The AKTRIN Furniture Information Center, in collaboration with Business & Research Associates have released the 2007 edition of the Review of the UK Domestic Furniture Market. This new study presents some interesting findings and conclusions.
Sales of residential furniture in the United Kingdom increased by 3.1% (or £145m) in 2004. However, 2005 proved to be a poor year for the industry, with sales declining by 4% and several major companies going into liquidation. Last year saw again an improvement with sales reaching £4950m, an increase of £80m or 1.6%. Total sales of domestic furniture are expected to reach £5005m in 2007.
The main furniture manufacturing groups at the present time are Galliform (part of the original MFI Furniture Group plc), the Nobia Group (including Magnet Ltd. and Gower Furniture) and Soundersleep Ltd. (Silentnight, Sealy, Rest Assured).
Sales of all product groups have grown during the past decade, with kitchen furniture showing most growth and bedroom furniture showing least growth. Sales of upholstered furniture totaled £1620m in 2006, compared to £1570m in 2005 and currently account for 33% of the total market. Sales of upholstered furniture are expected to reach £1640m in 2007. Kitchen furniture reached £1100m in 2005, £1115m in 2006, and are forecast to reach £1130m this year. Their market share is 23%.
Sales margins remained under pressure, although the major retailers such as Ikea, DFS, Argos and John Lewis could improve their position. They had been helped by the previous demise of competitors such as Uno, World of Leather, Kingsway, Landmark and more recently Courts, Allders, Furnitureland, and Durham Express.
As far as kitchen furniture is concerned, specialist kitchen furniture outlets are the main distributors with 41% of the market in value terms; within that sector independents account for 34%, whilst multiples account for 7%. Multiple cash / carry warehouses account for around 23% of the market in value terms, but a much larger share in volume terms.
Multiple furnishing stores remain the major outlets for upholstered furniture with 40% of total sales, compared with independent outlets with 19% of the total market. Within the multiple furnishing stores category specialist upholstery outlets account for around 26% of total sales.
In regards to domestic furniture other than kitchen and upholstered furniture, multiple furnishing outlets currently account for around 32% of total sales in value terms, whilst independent outlets account for around 31%.
Foreign suppliers have continued to increase their share of the UK market. Imports of domestic furniture reached £1672.7m in 2006, compared to £1579.2m in 2005. Imports currently account for 34% of the total market. The penetration rate varies considerably between product groups, reaching 58% for dining and living room furniture, but only 10% for kitchen furniture. Deliveries from outside the EEC now account for well over 50% of total imports.
